Student recitals create the greatest motivation for students to practice. When students know they will be performing music on a specific date, this focuses their energy towards that goal. The choice of pieces is important. Music that students enjoy that is challenging yet not overwhelming for their abilities is best.
There are many benefits to personal growth in the process. Students develop poise, self-confidence, self-esteem, and they experience the joy of musical self-expression. Younger students hear more experienced players which gives them a vision of possibilities. I always perform at the end of recitals, hopefully being an example to my students.
My favorite description of a recital is "a celebration of musical accomplishment." It always concludes socially with a reception.
